Certificate Requests

The Champaign County Clerk is the official record keeper of all birth, death, marriage, and civil unions that occur in Champaign County. The Vital Records division can provide certified, raised seal copies of these records to eligible individuals upon request and payment.

Birth Certificates

A certified birth certificate with a raised seal is $21.00 and $11.00 for each additional copy purchased in the same transaction. 

A birth certificate is an important vital document that can only be provided to specific people:

  • The individual named on the certificate if they are at least 18 years old or an emancipated minor with court documentation
  • One of the parents listed on the birth certificate 
  • A legal guardian with original court documents stating guardianship  
  • Legal representative of the individual named on the certificate 

The Champaign County Clerk has birth records for individuals born in Champaign County from 1878 to present. Adoption does not impact where a birth certificate is held, the adopted individual would need to go to the county clerk of the county they were born in to request a birth certificate. 

A free birth record is available to persons born in Champaign County who are verified as either homeless, residents of shelters for victims of domestic violence, or formerly incarcerated and released in the last 90 days.

Death Certificates

A certified death certificate with a raised seat is $21.00 and $12.00 for each additional copy purchased in the same transaction.

A death certificate is a vital record that can only be provided to a person that has a genealogical, personal, or property right interest in the record. 

The Champaign County Clerk has death records for individuals who died in Champaign County from 1878 to present.

Marriage Certificates

A certified marriage certificate with a raised seal is $16.50 and $13.00 for each additional copy purchased in the same transaction. 

A marriage license is filed with the Clerk after the marriage ceremony takes place. After that occurs, the Clerk's office can issue you a certified copy of your marriage certificate upon request. Marriage certificates are not automatically sent to couples. 

If the marriage took place more than 75 years ago, anyone can obtain a complete copy of the certificate. If it is less than 75 years old only the bride(s) and/or groom(s) may obtain a complete copy. Only the front side would be available to the general public. 

The Champaign County Clerk has marriage certificates for those who married in Champaign County from 1833 to present.
