COUNTY CLERK'S OFFICE HOURS FOR VOTER REGISTRATION

8:00am - 4:30pm, Monday - Friday except for county holidays.

 

REQUIREMENTS TO REGISTER TO VOTE
  • You must be a citizen of the United States
  • You must be at least 17 years of age on or before the date of the next primary and be at least 18 years of age on or before the date of the next election
  • You must reside in your precinct for at least 30 days prior to the election
  • Not be convicted and in jail
  • You must not claim the right to vote anywhere else

 

ONLINE REGISTRATION

One can register to vote through the Illinois State Board of Elections website by using their Online Voter Registration Application.

 

IN-PERSON VOTER REGISTRATION FORM

Two forms of identification are required showing your name, one must show your permanent residence, such as an Illinois driver's license, hunting or fishing license, library card, student identification, copy of a lease or rent receipt showing your address, or any piece of mail delivered to you at your residence. If you receive mail at a PO Box, please include this information with your street address.

Voter Registration closes 28 days prior to an election and opens 2 days after the election.

You may register to vote at the County Clerk's Office Monday-Friday, 8AM - 4:30PM or with deputy registrars throughout Champaign County.

 

MAIL-IN VOTER REGISTRATION FORM

A Mail-In voter registration form, Voter Registration Form (NVRA), is available at our web site for your convenience. If you have never registered to vote and choose to complete a mail-in form, you must vote the first time in person at your polling place or absentee vote at the County Clerk's Office. You will be required to show one ID complete with your registration address election day. If you receive mail at a PO Box, please include this information with your street address. When you register by mail your mail-in form must be postmarked by midnight, prior to the close of registration, which is 28 days prior to an election.

Acceptable forms of identification that you will need to provide the first time you vote:

  • A current and valid Government issued photo ID.

  • A college issued photo ID with either a copy of the applicant's lease or any mail, showing the delivery address, delivered to the applicant at that address. Students living in dormitories may present a "Move In" notice or a Room Assignment card from the University of Illinois Housing Department.

  • A current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or other government document that shows name and address

  • A Voter Registration Card is NOT an acceptable form of identification.

Mail-In forms are available at the Champaign County Clerk's office, here on our website, some banks, some libraries, driver's license facilities, Parkland College, and the University of Illinois Campus.

Note: When registering by mail you must vote in person the first time either at your precinct polling place or by casting an absentee ballot in the County Clerk's Office.

 

WHEN TO REGISTER TO VOTE

Registration is open year round except:

  • During the 28-day period just prior to an election.

  • During the 2 days after an election.

 

WHEN TO RE-REGISTER:

You do not need to re-register unless you:

  • Move to a different county

  • Change your name

 

CHANGE OF ADDRESS

If you have moved from one address in Champaign County to another address within the county you need to notify the County Clerk's Office of your new address. There are several ways to do this.

  • Fill out the change of address on the back of your voter registration card and mail that in (be sure to include your signature).

  • Come into the office and fill out an address change form.

  • Write a letter to our office informing us of your old address, new address, phone number, and your written signature.

  • Download a change of address form and mail it to our office

  • You may also make changes at any locations stated above that provide Mail-In voter registration forms.

We can accept address changes year round except during the 28-day period just prior to an election and for the 2 days after an election.

 

NAME CHANGE

When a person changes their name, they are required to re-register.  The process is the same as if it were a first time registration.  You may do this by completing an In-Person registration form or a Mail-In form (see requirements above).  Please provide your former name on either registration form under "Name (if changed)", on the In-Person form or in Section 10 of the Mail-In form.
